As promised, Edge of Tomorrow is "Groundhogs Day" meets "Aliens." Beyond the movies clear homage to "Aliens" via Bill Paxton and the guns which look tastefully similar to the M41-A, EOT seems to scene-quote all my favorite action sci-fi movie moments without being too "nudge nudge" about it: Sarah Connor reluctant stitch up, sentinels breaking into the Nebuchadnezzar, fist full of grenade pins al a another Cruise vehicle "War of the Worlds", and much more.
EOT delivers the action it promises without losing the audience to an anticlimactic end-of-movie, wall-of-white-noise, destruction-montage-bore-fest. During EOT, we the audience, come to know the big battle will inevitably happen at the end of a forever repeating day. Each day begins with Cage(Cruise) doing a little talking (and some expected "Groundhogs day" humor) to advance the plot, that is, until he finds himself once again in an alien mech-suit shit storm; only to die, be reborn, and do it all over again. We get spoon-fulls of action throughout. This systems does wonders for those who suffer from battle fatigue (the moment when it seems that no building in a city is worth saving). But, like all well written time-travel movies, just as we begin to anticipate the action, the rules are changed–and mech suites run out of batteries–and automatic weapons are traded in for shotguns.
Let's talk Tom Cruise, I love him. He's the guy I want leading me against aliens. A believer. Just stare into Tom's jaw clenched face and imagine what he's thinking in any movie–IN ANY SCENE: "I'm Maverick, an ace fighter pilot" or "I'm a real goddamn secret agent", or "I'm Jack Fucking Reacher." I'll take Cruise any day over some asshole like The Rock. I'm done being a Cruise apologist. He's the fucking mac.
oh yeah,
and I think one of the soldiers was the paperboy from SPACED.
